THE PARADOX OF INDIA

India is a land of approximately 1.2 billion people – living in the future as well as in the past
with least concern for the present. It elected Female Prime Minister (Srimati Indira Gandhi)
in the year 1966. Women continue to wield power in politics and business. But what about
rape and domestic violence? They are still rampant. Women soar in Bollywood , Journalism,
Law; but according to statistics 40% of women alone in the city of Delhi say they were
sexually harassed in public place at least once in their life. Women won the right to vote,
choose divorce , own property in the 1950s. But one in five honour killings worldwide take
place in India.

We are a contradictory culture. India is a paradox in many ways and what’s happening with
the Indian women, captures that paradox. India got freedom in the year 1947, but millions
of women in India till date are not independent in the true sense of the term. It is an irony
to see that , in India we have women who have absolute power such as Sonia Gandhi and
Kiran Bedi , whereas women with no power – such as the women from rural India or the
ones from the slum. Indian is the country  were women are the leading faces in politics,
business, head funds, television shows etc; but we do not have a solid law against the
hideous crime of marital rape – what about that? The marital rape bill has gone to the
parliament twice and political parties that are headed by women have sent it back – as if to
suggest that marriage is a legal licence to rape.
We have a huge youth population – more than 50% of the population is below the age of 25
whereas 65% of the population below the age of 35 (according to the 2017 revision of the
World Population Prospects). And all these young minds are deeply diverse and filled with
aspirations. It is in the hands of these young and deeply diverse men and women that the
future of the country lies – to make the life of the Indian women better.
