Gender roles have many a times misinterpreted or misunderstood. It is important for the people to know and understand that gender role change according to the respective society, time or the institute in concern. This is exactly what is happening in the gender role now: with the advancement of time and various social changes like gender equality, women liberation, financial independence of the women etc.
From earlier times the men have been termed to be the breadwinner of the family whereas the women have been restricted to home – looking after the children and cooking food for all. Although these rules were made by men, still they themselves felt victim to it , these rules gave the men sense of power and authority but also brought the pressure of fulfilling the various demands of the family member all alone. The so called ‘ego’ and ‘self-respect’ was threatened if they would ask the women of the house hold to work together and help in the efficient running of the family.
Today the society has witnessed a change of liberation. Although this change was women centric but it affected the men equally. Now the economic burden of the family would be shared equally by the two genders than just the men. This also gave rise to the concept of the women working and the men staying back at home and looking after the household and children. Although this change was criticised by the men who firmly believed in the ideology that men show work outside where as the women should be entitled to nothing but taking care of the household.
With the change in the various ideology of the society the patriarchy nature has also been challenged and crushed in various ways. So has to be the fate of the gender role especially the fathers. They have all the right to stay back at home and look after the children, because we should never forget that those children are share equal bond with their fathers as with their mother. This concept is new in India and not much progress has been made. Today the Indian society is largely focusing on the equal status of the gender. But it is just a matter of time when the fathers would get the equal right to stay back at home without having to face any criticism or abuse.
